- Catch Story: I caught this fish in 30 feet of water, using a medium weight Walleye rig with 8 lb test, a 3/8 oz orange jig and a frozen shiner minnow. I was jigging off the bottom when I got a fairly light bite. I set the hook and started reeling. It was super heavy and I could not keep the rod tip out of the water. I could not make much progress because the fish was taking more line than I was reeling in. After about 5 minutes of fighting the fish came to the surface and exploded out of the water, jumping 4 feet in the air. I have never screamed so loud in my life! The fish landed in the water on its back and belly up stunned for a few minutes. When we reached for its fin it took off for the bottom. I fought it for another 45 minutes before tiring it out enough to get it back to the surface. Luckily we were in a small, 14 ft Lund fishing boat which was only a couple feet out of the water. We heaved the fish into the boat, muscled it high enough to take a couple pictures, released it and it was gone!! I will never top that experience but I am going to keep trying!
