  • Catch Story: Jason was fishing with a medium sized sucker minnow and slip bobber setup. We were thinking he might catch a good sized northern pike or possibly a channel catfish as we had never caught a largemouth bass bigger than 16" on this particular lake despite years of fishing there. All but a couple of our bass caught there have been under 10" as we suspect the northern get most of them. Around noon when Jason's slip bobber disappeared and he set the hook he excitedly hollered to grab the landing net as he had a good one on his line. The bend of his rod confirmed to me he was right. After he worked the fish in close to us, and was able to bring him close to the surface of the lake temporarily, I identified it as a huge largemouth bass. I reminded Jason to use his rod properly and keep good tension on the line but to not try and overpower the fish and possibly break the line. As he had just switched to this pole from using a different panfish setup earlier in the day, I think we forgot to double check that the drag was still set correctly. Oops! I also had just tied on a new hook so when I saw the size of the fish I was hoping my knot was strong enough. Not to mention he was using an old pole of mine that was about 28 years old. All of these thoughts went through my mind when he got the fish near the fishing pier and the fish tried to dive under the pier and I told Jason to do the best he could to keep the fish from going under the pier and possibly tangling the line around a pier support. Eventually, with that old pole, minus the 2nd eyelet from the end, bending like I do not recall it ever doing before he was able to pull the fish up from the bottom of the lake and guide him toward the awaiting landing net I was holding. I think relief slightly outweighed excitement, especially for me, as Jason had caught a bigger largemouth bass at the age of 14 than I have been able to do up to this point at the age of 53. So proud of my son and if the fish continues to survive the northerns and a few muskies in that lake perhaps we can catch him again in a few years when he/she is even bigger. :)
