  • Catch Story: On July 24th, 2023, Everett was fishing from a canoe with his father on Alton Lake in the BWCA. It was a calm, hazy morning due to wildfires in Canada. They were both fishing jumbo leeches about 6 feet under a bobber. As they slowly drifted over a rock point that jutted out into the main lake basin, Everett’s father cast toward the shallower water. Everett decided to cast on the other side of the canoe out toward the deeper water. Everett looked away from his bobber momentarily and then suddenly felt his rod being yanked from his hand while the drag peeled out. Everett’s father shouted, “Everett, you got a fish on!”. Everett’s eyes grew wide as dinner plates as he struggled to hold onto his rod. “Keep reeling,” shouted Everett’s father. Everett fought the large fish close to the boat and caught sight of the massive bronze body for only a second before it peeled out drag on another run for the bottom of the lake. “Everett, that’s a huge smallmouth bass!” exclaimed his dad. Everett continued to reel. He lifted the rod tip toward his father who was able to reach down and grab the lip of the fish. The length of the fish was notched onto a canoe paddle. The fish was successfully released back into the water. The notch on the canoe paddle was later measured at the canoe outfitters and confirmed to be 18.5 inches.
