  • Catch Story: Me and my family always go out early in the season to look at the muskies (they are easy to see in the weed flats spawning) and catch a couple northern. We were familiar with carp fishing because we do it all the time at my grandparents house on Sweeney lake, but we hadn't done it before on Minnetonka. We were aware that there were some big ones there, so we brought a can of corn and some hooks just in case. During one of our muskie spotting trips, we found a school of about 150 carp (not exaggerating). They were all big and piled up on top of each other for a stretch of about 50 yards near shore. We were supper excited when we saw this, so we baited up with corn and casted towards them. It took nearly half an hour before one bit, but it was one of the big ones so it was worth the wait. We had our muskie net with, so we landed the fish in that. It took about 5 min to reel it in. It was super memorable because it was by far the most awkward fish I've ever held. It was way to big for its head, so it was hard to hold. However, the picture turned out well and the fish swam away without a problem. My mom measured it and it turned out to be 34". I had never seen a carp that big before, so it was amazing to be holding one. That was definitely the best first outing of the year I've ever had.
