- Catch Story: 8-year-old Drake could feel the thump, thump, thump, as he declared “Dad, I’ve got a good bite”. “Whammy!” he shouted as he set the hook with authority on the first fish of the Minnesota opener. Drake said, “It feels like a good one Dad. Keep us in open water”. “Grandpa I think it is a Walleye. Can you get the net?” Drake continued as he was directing the crew. As Grandpa expertly began to net the fish, Drake said, “Grandpa, don’t lose it”. To which Grandpa replied, “This isn’t my first Rodeo Buddy…” As Grandpa scooped up the fish he said, “I’ve been netting fish for over 70 years and this is no Walleye, but it is a lunker”. Drake could not believe his eyes when the huge perch came into focus. “Great Job Buddy… You caught the first fish of the year and it’s a lunker Perch! What a way to start out the season!” Grandpa said beaming with pride. The Yellow Perch measured 13 ¾ inches on the bump board.
