- Catch Story: It was a windy day. We weren't catching many fish, so we decided to anchor right off the northern point on the large island and fish slowly. I was slowly jigging a soft plastic bait on a light jig, when I felt the weight of the fish. I set the hook and it fought hard. I tried to keep the fish from wrapping up in the weeds below, but I was using a light line (maybe 6 lb.) After what seemed like several minutes, I was able to pull the fish shallow enough to catch a glimpse. I saw its long slender body, and thought it was a northern pike, but it dived down again, out of sight. When I pulled it up a second time, Greg saw the light color on its underside and thought it was walleye; however, it dived down again. The third time I pulled it up, we identified it as a bowfin. We tried it net it but we missed. It started heading towards the anchor rope and front-mounted trolling motor. Not wanting to lose it, I lead it around the front of the boat to the other side, and it went down again. The fourth time I brought it up, we had it tired enough to successfully net it.
