  • Catch Story: It was a beautiful Friday afternoon in Minnesota. Because I broke my leg playing hockey earlier in the season, I was able to go ice fishing after school. My aunt picked me up from school and gave me a ride to a spot to meet my uncle where we had done well at in the past. Upon arriving, we quickly punched a couple holes with the Jiffy and set up the Clam Vista, just in time for the evening bite. I chose my Pflueger President reel, mounted on none other than a Fenwick rod that day, and boy am I glad I did as it wasn't 15 minutes into it when a fish showed up on my Vexilar FL-18. I raised my jig to entice it, then SMACK, something big hit the Swedish Pimple Do-Jigger. Judging by the weight on the end of the line and the bow of the Fenwick, this was no small fish. Naturally, I started reeling like crazy and my uncle told me to slow down and relax or I'd lose it. The fish came up to the hole somewhat effortlessly and I dang near died when it swam by the hole...."IT'S HUGE - A MONSTER WALLEYE", I shouted. It was by far the biggest fish I'd ever hooked. Turning it's head up the hole was a different story as about the time I thought I had won the battle, it made a run and I thought for sure that was the end. After another short fight, the fish was back up to the bottom of the hole and it was obvious the battle was over, as the monster had thrown in the towel and my Berkley Trilene Micro Ice line held the weight of the Walleye. The fish eventually came up, touching on all sides of the hole on the way up and smiling at us with a mouth full of razor sharp teeth. My uncle stuck 2 fingers under the gills and pulled it out of the water and it wasn't until then that I saw how truly enormous she really was. We quickly covered the holes, just in case disaster struck, then went outside to see it in the daylight - it was awesome! We measured it - 31.25 inches long, with a 19" girth - took some photo's and released it back into the frigid winter waters, just like any good fisherman would do. Needless to say, I was too excited to tell my 'Once in a Lifetime' story to think about fishing anymore that Friday night (...was also in need of a clean pair of shorts), and with excitement and a heart filled with pride, we packed up and drove off into the sunset.
