Those We Honor

You’ll find more than just fishing celebrities in this list. One can make a significant impact
on the lives of many without ever being well known. It is important to honor all of
those who had a great influence on the great sport of fishing, whether famous or not.
Corporate advances tend to be much more visible to us. For it’s their products that
shape the evolution of the sport of fishing.

Ed Gerchy

Edward (Ed) Gerchy’s lifelong love of fishing began on the Housatonic River in Connecticut where he enjoyed fishing for eels as a child.  He was born in Shelton, Connecticut on June 01, 1928.  As an adult Ed enjoyed deep sea fishing in Florida, California, Canada and Cuba.  He spent one summer working for Jake Pete’s Houseboats taking people on fishing trips in the Minnesota Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Area.

Ed began his journalism career with the Los Angeles Times.  After moving to Minnesota Ed began the Outdoor Outlines newspaper in 1974.  This newspaper was a well-known publication with articles written by Ed, or notable guest writers, detailing new laws or items of interest that were hunting or fishing related.  Outdoor Outlines enjoyed a large subscription base, with circulation in the thousands, engaging readers from all over the United States, Canada and Australia.  Outdoor Outlines was a family-owned publication for 35 years.

Ed spent his lifetime promoting outdoor information, responsible conservation and education in his newspaper, for the St. Cloud Times, on WJON, a local radio station, and other publications.  He was a founding member of the St. Cloud Bassmaster’s Club, a member of the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame and a lifetime member of the Sauk Rapids Sportsman Club.  Ed was invited to be an observer for the Bassmaster Classic in Arkansas.  He won a North Star Bassmaster Tournament in Alexandria, Minnesota.  His lifelong commitment to educating people on all outdoor pursuits and activities has left a legacy for future sporting generations.  Ed died September 30, 2014.
